If you are interested in becoming a foster parent contact Highland Shores Children’s Aid we will answer your questions and help you decide if fostering is right for you and your family. A number of steps are required before one can become an approved foster parent including; a criminal record check and drivers’ license abstract check, Children’s Aid provincial and local data base check, medical evaluations, home inspection, and references.
You will also be asked to participate in a ten-week training session called PRIDE (Parent, Resources, Information, Development, and Education). While participating in the PRIDE training sessions a resource worker will meet with you to complete a home study; SAFE Assessment (Structured Assessment Family Evaluation). The SAFE assessment tool is a standardized process used across Ontario to collect information and assess the suitability of individuals to become foster parents.
The training process and completion of the SAFE assessment helps you learn more about how trauma and loss can impact children and youth that are needing foster care placements. The primary purpose of a home study is to determine if a family is ready, willing, and able to be a suitable and safe resource for a child or youth. The home study also provides family information to assist CAS in making an appropriate match between a child or youth and a foster family. Additional training is required as part of the approval process which the worker will discuss with you.
The process to become an approved foster parent can vary in the length of time and there is no cost to participate in the training and assessment process. All family members participate in the decision and process to become a foster family.
