December 6th is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, also known informally as White Ribbon Day. This day is commemorated in Canada to mark the anniversary of the tragic event that took place in 1989 at École Polytechnique in Montreal in which fourteen women were singled out for their gender and murdered.
This day is often marked by vigils, discussions and other reflections on preventing violence against women. We are all encouraged to observe a minute of silence on December 6th and to wear a white ribbon to show our commitment to ending violence.
