United Nations Day on October 24th marks the anniversary of the United Nations Charter coming into force in 1945 and celebrates the work of this organization. The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
Traditionally United Nations Day is marked with discussions, meetings and also displays about the goals and achievements of the organization. The main purpose of the day is to uphold that for which the United Nations stands; security, human rights, world peace, economical and international development and social progress.
The UN does not work alone but together with many specialized agencies, including: the World Health Organization (WHO); the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); International Labour Organization (ILO); United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); and United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
